Greg Bridges:
The term "middle school teacher" often conjures up an image of a person who must be crazy.  Who would really want to subject themselves to spending 9 hours a day with 90 high-energy 10-14 year- olds? But anyone who has ever met Greg Bridges knows that there exists another kind of person who, besides having a passion for teaching adolescents, is generous with encouragement and whose interest in a child’s development goes much further. Soft-spoken and genuine to a fault, Greg is known for his dedication to helping students achieve their goals. His philosophy is the idea that a teacher can be much more than just a facilitator of knowledge; he can also be a mentor, a partner, and a friend.

Greg began his adventure career at age five when he climbed the tallest tree in his neighborhood. Since that time he has climbed several mountains, logged hundreds of miles in his sea kayak, rode his bike to Florida for a friend’s wedding, volunteered as a ski patrolman, and has surfed throughout the south Pacific. He also rock climbs and is a white water rafting guide in Maupin, OR. When he is not teaching and has some rare free time, he builds wooden kayaks, enjoys photography, and walks his Labradors Retrievers.

Greg is known for his skills as the 8th grade teacher at Terrebonne Community School, combining a knack for teaching reading, social studies and math, along with helping teenagers grow into mature young-adults. Students who have been in his class have remarked on his compassionate nature, his love for cultural history, his ability to forge group solidarity and his genuine enthusiasm for seeing his students succeed.

Greg has an undergraduate degree from San Diego State University, a Masters degree from Long Beach State University, as well as numerous teaching credentials and licenses.

Greg and his wife Lisa live in Bend, Oregon, with their 2 children, Abby and Luke.

Another unique program is a rock-climbing and bouldering unit that all students participate at Smith Rock State Park. He built a full size hockey rink at his school that his students use throughout the year with an inline skate unit. He received the unsung hero award and was voted top 100 educators in the United States in 2001.
